Do - keep it in its original box or a sealed bag.

Do - give it a gentle wipe after each wear.

Do - keep lotions and perfume away and make jewellery the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off!

Caring for Freshwater Pearls

I have really grown to love and appreciate pearls. The fact that they are mainly made from Oysters and Mussels is fascinating in itself. But the pearl is actually produced as a natural defence reaction to an irritant like a grain of sand entering the Oyster. The shell of the Oyster secretes layers of nacre over the irritant which results in a pearl! This occurs naturally to make natural pearls.

An Oyster helped along by pearl harvesters, will produce cultured pearls. Cultured pearls have the irritant manually planted into the Oyster. I just think this is amazing!

Because pearls are natural shells we need to put knots between the pearls to prevent them from rubbing against each other causing damage and to stop dirt getting inside the pearls.

Here is another interesting fact! To tell if your pearls are real or not, you can do the tooth test! Rub the pearl gently on your front tooth and if it is rough, its real and if its smooth and slippery its imitation!

So keep your pearls looking lovely by wiping with a cloth after use and if you need them re-stringing I can do that. Just get in touch at hello@watermeadowlane.co.uk

I'm glad to see pearls are very “in” at the moment...then again have they ever been out.....
